Founded by the Du Pont family, US Airways began as airmail operation. Under the name of Allegheny Airlines, US Airways began to focus its attentions on acquiring and servicing business and leisure passengers. In the 1970s, it was the largest airline in the Northeast and sixth in the world. US Airways rebranded itself USAir, after the Airline Deregulation Act in 1979. The past decades have seen US Airways expand their routes by acquiring struggling airlines. They have continued to weather various setbacks including 9/11 and financial crises. Currently, US Airways – based out of Tempe, Arizona – is a member of the Star Alliance fleet.
US Airways flies to 132 destinations, located in 31 countries daily. Operating over 3,100 flights everyday, US Airways has hubs in Phoenix, Charlotte, and Philadelphia. Operations in the Midwest and overseas areas – in particular South America, Asia, and Australia – have increased due to code sharing with United Airlines.
Through US Airways Shuttle, US Airways offers hourly service between the major cities of the northeast including New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. Regional operations, operated by subsidiary airlines, service the small towns of America through the name of US Airways Express.
The US Airways fleet, comprised almost exclusively of Airbus planes, consists of 338 mainline jets and 285 regional and turbo-prop planes. The fleet average is approximately 12.8 years.
For domestic and international flights, both long haul and short trips, US Airways offers both first class and economy class options. Envoy, US Airways business class designation, is available on flights to South America, Europe, and the Middle East. Envoy class passengers receive complimentary food and drink.
