Founded in October of 1963 and partially owned by the Jamaican government, Air Jamaica has continued to expand as one of the largest airlines in the world. In the 1970s, Air Jamaica experienced significant growth and added flights to the Caribbean, Philadelphia, Canada, and Puerto Rico, which set the foundation of the company. The airline experienced financial loss in the 2004, but the Jamaican government continued their ownership. Since 2006, Air Jamaica has been owned and operated by Caribbean Airlines Limited, which the government has a 16 percent stake in.
The different types of aircraft in the fleet include Airbus A300B4-200, Airbus A310-300, Airbus A319-100, Airbus A320-200, Airbus A321-200, Airbus A340-300, Boeing 727-200, Boeing 747-100, Douglas DC-8-62, Douglas DC-8-61, Douglas DC-8-51, Douglas DC-8-41, McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32, and McDonnell Douglas MD-83.
When flying with Air Jamaica, seating in Economy Class and Business Class are available to purchase. Those flying Economy Class are allowed to bring two pieces of checked baggage and those in Business Class can bring three items of checked baggage. Each passenger is also allowed to bring one carry-on item when traveling on the plane at no extra charge in addition to a personal item. The Economy Class seats offer 33 inches between the seats with overhead screens available to view entertainment during the flight. Business Class seats offer 60 inches between the seats with seat-back screens that are available to view television shows or movies.
Air Jamaica has flights to and from Antigua, Barbados, Caracas, Fort Lauderdale, Georgetown, Grenada, Kingston, London, Miami, Montego Bay, Nassau, New York, Orlando, Paramaribo, Port of Spain, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, Tobago, and Toronto. The two main airports that the airline flies out of include John F. Kennedy International Airport and Sangster International Airport.
Those flying Economy Class can enjoy audio entertainment with complimentary headphones that are provided by the airline with videos shown on overhead screens to enjoy during the flight. A complimentary snack is also provided with alcoholic beverages available for purchase. Those in Business Class can enjoy the same amenities, but are also offered alcoholic beverages at no extra cost during the flight.
